Traveling across the world for business when you are also a caregiver for an aging parent is stressful. Luckily for me, my brother and aunt volunteered to help me out. They each traveled to NY and stayed one week with my dad who is aging in place alone in my childhood home. My dad doesn't need round the clock caregiving assistance he only needs help with some things and general monitoring, for example, he can still shower and dress himself or at least I thought he still could?
It was my aunt who brought to my attention the fact that she hadn't seen or heard my dad take a shower the entire week she was there with him. This alarmed me and instantly put me into oh shit mode. Why isn't he showering? What the hell is going on? Then I realized well shit Renee, the current shower might be a bit scary now for my dad whose reflexes are not what they used to be. This is when I realized its time for me to senior proof my dad's bathroom starting with that scary shower.
